Condoleezza seems a happy woman! Obama?!

Obama cannot ignore the clear partisan nature of Pakistan today; but will he act?

KARACHI: The moot question is, will Obama be able to force Zardari to act against terror groups within Pakistan, when not only has the control of Bush over Pakistan waned dramatically in the past few months but Zardari also has his hands full of other phenomenally troublesome issues, mainly being the dismal economic condition of Pakistan? Obama will note that amid intense pressure from India and the US, the security forces in Pakistan have launched an operation against militant organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and arrested Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, allegedly the mastermind of the Mumbai terrorist attack that took a toll of 171 people. Rehman was among 15 people detained by the security forces in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir. He is believed to be an operation commander of LeT and has been identified by the sole living terrorist arrested after the Mumbai carnage to be the mastermind of the terrorist attack in the financial hub of India.

LeT was banned by the Pakistan government in 2002 but resurfaced under the banner of a charity organisation Jaamat-ud-Dawa and has been especially active in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir. No wonder it was the first to reach the victims of 2005 South Asia earthquake that took a toll of 79,000 people in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir and North West Frontier Province [However, senior doctors and surgeons told this correspondent that due to naivety of its workers, many of the injured people treated by Jaamat-ud-Dawa had to undergo amputation].

Jaamat-ud-Dawa is pretty active throughout Pakistan and is led by Hafiz Saeed. The Pakistan authorities have also placed restrictions on the movement of Maulana Masood Azhar, the chief of the outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) by confining him to his multi-storeyed residence in the Model Town area of Bahawalpur in Punjab. Advisor of Interior Minister Rehman Malik told journalists in the capital city of Islamabad that India has handed over a list of three persons to Pakistan, including Maulana Masood Azhar, Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon and asked for their immediate extradition.
