Condoleezza seems a happy woman! Obama?!

Obama cannot ignore the clear partisan nature of Pakistan today; but will he act?

KARACHI: The moot question is, will Obama be able to force Zardari to act against terror groups within Pakistan, when not only has the control of Bush over Pakistan waned dramatically in the past few months but Zardari also has his hands full of other phenomenally troublesome issues, mainly being the dismal economic condition of Pakistan? Obama will note that amid intense pressure from India and the US, the security forces in Pakistan have launched an operation against militant organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and arrested Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, allegedly the mastermind of the Mumbai terrorist attack that took a toll of 171 people. Rehman was among 15 people detained by the security forces in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir. He is believed to be an operation commander of LeT and has been identified by the sole living terrorist arrested after the Mumbai carnage to be the mastermind of the terrorist attack in the financial hub of India.

LeT was banned by the Pakistan government in 2002 but resurfaced under the banner of a charity organisation Jaamat-ud-Dawa and has been especially active in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir. No wonder it was the first to reach the victims of 2005 South Asia earthquake that took a toll of 79,000 people in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir and North West Frontier Province [However, senior doctors and surgeons told this correspondent that due to naivety of its workers, many of the injured people treated by Jaamat-ud-Dawa had to undergo amputation].

Jaamat-ud-Dawa is pretty active throughout Pakistan and is led by Hafiz Saeed. The Pakistan authorities have also placed restrictions on the movement of Maulana Masood Azhar, the chief of the outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) by confining him to his multi-storeyed residence in the Model Town area of Bahawalpur in Punjab. Advisor of Interior Minister Rehman Malik told journalists in the capital city of Islamabad that India has handed over a list of three persons to Pakistan, including Maulana Masood Azhar, Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon and asked for their immediate extradition.

TEAB: SCRATCHY LEGACY, ITCHY FUTURE

Rather than being a voice outside the “Washington echo chambers,” TEAB has become synonymous with a pseudo Treasury doing more harm than good to the Obama administration. It is high time Barack Obama – ‘Bo’ for short – scraps the board, says B&E’s gyanendra kashyap.

Consider the findings of the Council of Economic Advisers (headed by Christina Romer, Austan Goolsbee and Cecilia Rouse) which states in its First Quarterly Report that as of August 2009 end, only $151.4 billion of the original $787 billion has been outlaid or has gone to the American taxpayers and businesses in the form of tax reductions. Just to add to these, the US Bureau of Labour Statistics now states that ever since Obama passed the $787 billion stimulus bill in February 2009, instead of job creation, over 2.6 million Americans have lost jobs.

Capitol Hill has had a history of political appointments where fundraisers have been made members of namesake advisory boards without having much of a role. But with Obama, whose campaign mantra was based on the philosophy of change, one expected better; ergo, such political appointments came as an unpleasant surprise. Since the previous issues, B&E has been covering how there is a clear conflict of interest that some members of TEAB have had in gaining from TEAB’s bailout plans (for examples, Buffet through his investments in Goldman Sachs before it got government funds, Robert Rupin through Citigroup of which he is the Chairman).

Perhaps to his discredit, it is not only Barack’s political appointments on economic advisory boards which is being criticised, but also the manner in which the current allotment of funds is being made – the states that supported him have received generous allotments of stimulus money e.g. Colorado and Virginia (two traditionally red states that lit up blue for Obama in 2008) have jointly received $8.9 billion – for information, Barack Obama, in his victory speech, had said, “We have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America.”

Perhaps the President has realised his folly, due to which a parallel running body, Presidential Economic Recovery Advisory Board (PERAB) headed by Paul Volcker has been strangely created – or perhaps not so strangely. But it is merely a step, as four of the members of TEAB are members of PERAB too, excluding Paul Volcker. This has prevented the wisdom of the likes of Volcker from trickling down to action.

Environment and Wildlife Film Festival

Although Vatavaran, Environment and Wildlife Film Festival was not exactly that, it was nothing short of one either!!

Awareness generation is the first step toward bringing about action. And people will take action only if they are aware of the situation, whether it is about the harm that global warming might cause to the world tomorrow or it is about the fact that some species might be washed away for good”, explained an organiser of the Film Festival.

Although films were the biggest draw at this event, eventually, it was not just the documentaries that brought people to CMS Vatavaran. There were also seminars and panel discussions by wildlife experts and environmentalists. Besides, there were workshops on wildlife filmmaking conducted by renowned wildlife filmmakers – the Bedi Brothers (Ajay and Vijay Bedi) for budding and aspiring wildlife filmmakers. Recognising this platform that addressed alarming issues through films and discussions, Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit graced the occasion to reinforce the message, while filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt gave away the award for the Best Documentary Film of the event.

“Through this event, we aim to capture young minds and create awareness about these alarming issues, so that they become guardians of the world tomorrow”, mentioned a panellist, filmmaker and wildlife activist, Rita Banerji. And indeed, inspiring and inciting, the CMS Vatavaran, Environment & Wildlife Film Festival would have surely left an indelible impression on all minds, young and old.

Sir, you feed us, we won’t forget that

Bhutan has achieved progress that India (or any other nation) could well follow, from infrastructural development to energy sufficiency. Interestingly, it has done so with help from India as India is its largest partner to provide aid. In an interaction, Tenzin Rondel Wangchuk, the Counsellor at Bhutanese Embassy in India reveals issues, irritants, and much more:

“5 things Bhutan appreciates about India...”

RELATIONSHIP:
Because of the historical and cultural ties amongst a multitude of other reasons, India and Bhutan share an extremely close and cordial relationship. This relationship exists not because of geographic and political compulsions but because there is a pervading goodwill and friendship which is remarkably genuine and honest.

SUPPORT FOR UN MEMBERSHIP: For Bhutan to advance as a modern independent state in the comity of nations, the single most important step in our modern history was joining the United Nations on September 21, 1971. India sponsored our membership to the United Nations and this is something all Bhutanese will always appreciate.

ECONOMIC COOPERATION: India is Bhutan’s largest trading partner and therefore shares a very close economic relation. Bhutan and India have a Free Trade Agreement in place which facilitates free and uninterrupted trade. An important initiative taken by them is concerning cooperation in the field of hydropower electricity. This agreement envisages development of 10,000 MW of electricity of 2020, much of which will be sold to India to the meet demand for energy to drive its booming economy.

NON-INTERFERENCE INTERNAL ISSUES:
As our closest neighbour and friend, India has never interfered in our internal matters. In fact, Bhutan has gone through great political changes and economic advancement in the last five decades or so. Through all these changes, India has been one country and a true friend which has always supported Bhutan.

DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS:
Bhutan is a developing country and heavily reliant on donor assistance. India is by far the biggest donor to Bhutan. The first two five year plans were completely financed by India.

Temptation island!

Bali is a land of surprises. This small little wonderland is choc-a-bloc with gifts of nature, culture and heritage for its visitors. For those who are blessed to call it home, Bali is heaven and offers beaches, both virgin and popular. Bali’s rather small size doesn’t limit the variety of options to those who like to explore. Ranging from cultural dance performances to exquisite relaxing beaches, Bali has it all. Although its surface area permits you to drive around the entire coastline in just a day, you would cherish every bit of this exquisite drive, which would be a part of your sweet memories forever…!

Once in Bali, based on personal preferences, one could opt for a place to stay either in the hip and happening town of Kuta or in a place like Seseh, which is quietly nestled in the Southwest of Bali and is slightly out of town. The benefit of a vacation at Bali is that if you are looking for serene surrounds and peace of mind, one could live at a villa in the suburbs and unwind whilst also being able to cover as much ground as required for site-seeing and indulging in all sorts of activities. Visiting Museum Le Mayeur for the art lovers is a must. It was the Belgian artist Adrien Jean Le Mayeur’s house of antique carvings which became a museum. He married the renowned Legong (classic Balinese dance) dancer Ni Polok when he was 55 and she was 15. This museum tells tales of their love, travels and more. A truly beautiful temple, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan was built in the 17th century and is an important Hindu-Buddhist temple dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters. It forms a breathtaking silhouette against the backdrop of the misty mountains and is also one of the most frequented sites. Other than museums, picturesque beaches, mesmerising dance performances and enchanting temple ceremonies, Bali has a fabulous night life as well. Give a rush to the party animal within yourself and shop until you drop at Seminyak, which is host to the best night life and shopping experience on the island of Bali.

Total companies jumped by our ceos

Interestingly, 45% (a clear majority) of the B&E Power 100 CEOs have only worked with the company that they are leading currently. 34% of them have job-hopped once, while only 21% have changed jobs twice or more number of times. Editor’s translation: 79% of CEOs have never jumped a company or have jumped only once. Loyalty pays, and here’s proof.

Ceo mba qualification

NON MBA CEOs 54% don’t have mbas but contribute to 44.4% to the gross profits of B&E power 100

MBA CEOs46% have mbas and contribute to 55.6% to the gross profits of B&E power 100

Though the count of MBA CEOs in the list of B&E Power 100 is lower (46%), their lot contributes 55.6% to the gross profits of B&E Power 100, while non-MBA CEOs contribute to only 44.4%! An MBA CEO does seem to be marginally performing better...

“Our prices are still low...”

B&E: Can you reveal to us, the initial ground work that was done by the company before entering the Indian market?

VB:
The initial five-six years went into understanding the market and in setting up an adequate cold storage system. Setting up this extensive cold chain distribution system has involved the transfer of state-of-the-art food processing technology by McDonald’s and its international suppliers to pioneering Indian entrepreneurs, who are today an integral part of the cold chain.

B&E: Was it difficult to popularise the concept of QSR in the land of samosa eaters?

VB:
From the very beginning, unlike the other players, we Indianised our menu and always kept its pricing easy on the pocket of Indians, (a strategy) which I term as branded affordability.

B&E: Who were your biggest competitors when you commenced operations? Were you worried about the other global brands that were entering the country then?

VB:
Not really (on the question of whether other global QSRs were competitors), rather the local branded and unbranded players were our key competitors. Even the roadside aaloo-tikki vendor was our competitor.

The third time in india

LG finally had it right the third time in india. now it is decisively upping the stakes

But what came to the company’s rescue was their will to learn from their own mistakes and set out new rules of their own. For instance, in the late 1990s, when the competitors lured the dealers by giving them credit periods of 45 to 90 days, LG in fact asked dealers to pay in advance for its products. This helped them pick the right kind of partners from the crowd. Among the few initial strategies, which the company adopted, was a change in the management structure to suit the local requirements and backed by an understanding of Indian work culture. They vested the power in the hands of Indian employees in a big way with their own Foreign Service Employees (FSE’s) confined to just being facilitators. Interestingly, LG did not initially get into price wars, which was the vogue at that time in the segment. Their slogan was ‘No scheme, no gimmick, great products and honest prices’. But LG had to also deal with the image of ‘inferior products’ in some categories.

So, as the company realised it had greater potential in the lower segments, it went on the rampage with fierce price wars and sorted out penetration issues. Moon B. Shin, in an exclusive interaction with B&E, elucidated, “To increase brand awareness, LG sent vans across India, covering a distance of 5000 km every month and focused on building a strong dealer network.” These strategies gave it market leadership in many categories. As per 2008 figures (ORG-gfk), LG was commanding a share of 24% in ACs, 24% in microwaves, 27% in DVD players, and 23.1% in LCD TVs. Interestingly, LG later saw that the low end was becoming increasingly crowded and therefore launched its Blue Ocean Strategy. Now LG is consciously trying to play on the ‘best-in-quality’ positioning and deliberately commanding premium on price; knowing well that the ‘inferior’ perception is not a problem any more. The only problem is that key categories have seen decline in market share in India for 2008 (see B&E Corporation on LG in the issue dated February 6, 2009). Could LG’s second repositioning lead to confusion in Indian customers and decline in its fortunes? Indeed, it’s a sword that could cut both ways. They must use it very, very carefully.

5 Attitudes that can drag your reputation to hell

Brand reputations are worth billions of dollars. Here are the five things to avoid when facing a reputational crisis

It was a scene pulled from a nightmare. A Penn State graduate assistant allegedly witnessed a young boy, about 10 years old, being sexually brutalized in the locker room showers by the football team’s former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The crisis of failed leadership that followed has ended Joe Paterno’s coaching career, tarnished the reputation of a legendary program, and shaken Penn State’s leadership team all the way to the President’s office. Within the tale are reputational lessons to be learned by every business executive who thinks that “that couldn’t happen on my watch.”

Experts warn of five common attitudes that have the power to drag your reputation, and that of your organization, straight into the fiery pit.

1. The law is our defense
As students rioted in support of the ousted coach, one protestor pouted to a TV reporter, “He didn’t break any laws.” Mark that statement as factually correct but missing the point. In most cases, stakeholders will hold your organisation to a much higher standard than legal compliance, particularly if your brand purports to stand for positive social values.

Paul Danos, dean of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, calls to task those in business and other institutions who fail mightily in their societal responsibilities while staying well clear of the town’s sheriff.

Speaking of bank regulators and CEOs who allowed illogical risks to flourish in our banking and investment institutions, Danos says, “The parties had the power to avert disaster, but they likely lacked the knowledge their positions required, or even a thorough appreciation of the duties they had assumed. Most important, they seemed to lack the courage to speak up when necessary.”

Leaders must fully understand their duties and responsibilities, and appreciate the courage it takes to make a decision that might hurt a colleague or damage an organisation’s reputation.

A victim of past benchmarks, this Fevicol ad falls short

Over the years Fevicol has given great ads to TV viewers. The most recent however, lacks a strong script, humour, air time and direction. In short, it’s blunt on impact

If a certain brand commands 70% of the market, it would be fair to say that it has become synonymous to the category it represents. Wishful thinking, many might claim. Not so when you’re referring to the brand being on top, going from strength to strength, year after year. Fevicol is today a synonym for adhesives. Along with sub-brands (like Fevikwik and Fevistik; owned by Pidilite Industries) it commands 90% of the Indian adhesives market. Bluntly put – let’s give the brand its due!

So what makes Fevicol so successful? The bond that it enjoys with its TG, which is the carpenter clan, is perhaps stronger than the way it keeps parts of a furniture together. From the very start, and especially over the past decade, Fevicol’s ATL and BTL marketing strategies have been to directly connect with its TG. Unlike its competitors who went the indirect channel way, the brand approached and educated the carpenters directly. And so, besides TVCs that have worked to peg the positioning of the brand as a ‘strong adhesive’, initiatives like Fevicol furniture books (showcasing furniture designs), Fevicol Champion’s club (bringing carpenters to join a social club) and various vocational training programmes have only helped strengthen the identity of the brand.

The latest from Fevicol is an answer to those who’ve questioned whether the brand can do more than what it already achieved. The TVC (titled ‘Phone Call’) is no more about how strong a binding agent it is. (Remember the ‘Majboot jodh hai, jo tootega nahi’ punchline? Or how about the TVCs that showed an egg that won’t crack because the hen that laid it fed from a Fevicol tube?). It’s about saving time. The ad no longer drags on the old concept of ‘how strong’, but having established that identity of the brand, it talks about ‘how fast’ is that how strong! The brand it serves on the table is the latest extension from Fevicol called Fevicol Speedx. When asked about the product, Vishal Malhan, CMO, Fevicol Division, Pidilite Industries, tells 4Ps B&M, “Fevicol Speedx promises to address the need for bringing speed in furniture-making. Its advanced formula uses Nano Magnet Technology as the handling strength of bond by Fevicol Speedx is achieved in just 2 hours vis-a-vis 6 to 8 hours with a regular white adhesive.”

A “different” way of building brand equity

More and more companies now realise that recruiting the differently-abled can be more than a CSR initiative, and can help build the brand and give an image boost to the employer.

Twenty-year-old Tamkin Khan greets you warmly with a friendly smile when you visit the Costa Coffee store, located in the tony Green Park area of New Delhi. Using expansive hand gestures, he can be seen ushering guests to their tables while politely gesturing others to wait if the tables are all taken. Guests are struck by Khan’s enthusiasm for his work and their admiration grows even deeper upon realising that he is both speech and hearing impaired. Khan has been working at the Costa Coffee outlet for the past three years and his employers vouch for the fact that in all these years he has never been late to work even once.

Like Khan, there are some more in the store. And that is what makes this Costa Coffee store stand apart. Five out of the eight personnel working at this outlet are differently-abled. In fact, the café chain is going all out to ensure that as many differently-abled people get to operate a majority of its stores across the country. It plans to open eight to nine new stores, which will be run entirely by differently-abled persons in the next one year. By the end of 2012, the company plans to run 20% of its stores across the country by differently-abled people. Not to be left out, Bangalore-based Café Coffee Day, from the stable of Amalgamated Bean Company Ltd, has tied up with an NGO called Enable India to hire about 100 such employees per year.

Like Costa Coffee, more and more companies in the country are now aggressively recruiting differently-abled people as they look to take their CSR initiatives farther beyond their usual goody two-shoes routine. Until about a few years ago, differently-abled people were only given low-end jobs like managing transport and admin tasks because it was believed that this was the limit of their abilities. But now companies have come to realise that recruiting the differently-abled can be more than a CSR initiative. It is actually about tapping into a vast pool of talented resources, which was earlier overlooked. As a result of this change in thinking, companies in increasing numbers are coming out to hire differently-abled people and integrating them into the mainstream. And once hired, they are not relegated to mere filing tasks – they are assigned roles depending on their qualifications and abilities, and have as much a

Congress’s first major offensive to retake the Dalit vote

Meira Kumar’s elevation as Speaker is the Congress’s first major offensive to retake the Dalit vote.

With her selection, many birds have been killed by one stone, no one more important than Mayawati. It has posed a direct challenge to Uttar Pradesh’s presiding deity and her brand of Dalit politics. Mayawati has left no occasion to challenge Sonia, at times quite personally: this is the Congress president’s riposte.

Last year, battle lines were drawn between the two when `Behan’ Mayawati had denied Sonia the permission to hold a rally in Rae Bareli. She cited a flimsy violation of procedure. Clearly to stop Meira Kumar from growing. In the run up to the trust vote on the Indo-US nuclear deal, Mayawati had emerged as leader of the oust-Congress campaign, only later to be thwarted comprehensively.

Sonia’s chose of Meira is natural. The new Speaker has in the past bested known Dalit stalwarts like Ram Vilas Paswan and an emerging Mayawati from Bijnor in UP, back in the 1980s. Meira won Sasaram, Jagjivan Ram’s old constituency in Bihar with a thumping majority in 2004 and has retained her seat in 2009. That counts for a lot. So clearly, even Paswan is on the hit list.

With such a distinguished lineage – and now a political heritage - it is surprising that Meira Kumar has been missing from the Congress ranks. This former diplomat has what it takes to turn around Congress’s Dalit fortunes. The first salvo in that direction has been fired.

No more tiger trails?

Peace can now be restored, but only if Tamilians are successfully restored to the mainstream

finally, the Sri Lankan security forces have managed to corner the Tiger in his own lair. When Colombo announced that over 350 bodies of LTTE combatants including the Tiger bosses and near-mythical figure, Velupillai Prabhakaran’s dead bodies were recovered from the war zone, it seemed to one and all to be the welcome end to the Tiger terror. The list of those killed included crème da la crème names and LTTE seems to have been left headless. A jubilant Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, announced to a relieved nation that the ‘final task’ for liberation had been accomplished.

Those who are left of the LTTE claim that Prabhakaran’s death has been forged. Meanwhile, the fate of thousands of unarmed civilians, reportedly accompanying the Tigers, remains unknown. Colonel Hariharan, ex-head of military intelligence of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka back in the 1980s, told B&E, “One has to go by the version of the head of the government. The Sri Lankan President is accountable to his people.” It was a veiled admission that he had no independent sources for confirming Prabhakaran’s death. But now that Prabhakaran and LTTE are out of the way, the question is – does the Sri Lankan government have a road map to bring Tamils into the mainstream and build a foundation for lasting peace?
